As spring comes creeping up on us, it’s the perfect time to swap out your cold weather gear in favor for some fresh, lighter digs. Spring cleaning your closet doesn’t have to be boring or dreadful, it can be fun and restorative! A well cleaned, organized closet is the ultimate prize of a successful spring cleaning spree. Plus, with more space in your closet, you can shop til you drop for the newest spring fashions. We’re going to give you some tips to make spring cleaning easier than ever.

Divide & Conquer

If you have an overflowing closet of clothes/shoes or if your closet is huge, the task of organizing is probably enough to send you into a tailspin. Here’s a secret…you don’t have to spring clean your closet all in one day! Divide pants, tops, sweaters, tanks, shoes, jewelry, etc., and plan on tackling each of these one day at a time. Breaking it up into smaller projects will help calm your stress levels and make the process much more manageable.

Don’t Be Scared to Toss

Think of spring cleaning as a cleanse, but without the green juice. When you’re sorting through your belongings in the previous step, throw away anything you haven’t worn in the past year. Think long and hard if you are going to wear certain items next season. If you’re having a tough time deciding, toss or donate it. Only 100% “yes” items should be allowed to stay in your closet. Trust us, you’ll gain precious closet space and minimize clutter. Embrace the purge! Consolidation is key.

Group Alike Items Together

As you’re re-organizing your “keep” piles, group items that are similar together. For example, hang all tank tops together, hang all pants in one section, all long sleeve shirts, so on and so forth. This will help you find items a lot faster rather as you’re getting ready in the morning rather than scouring through your entire closet looking for a specific pair of capris.

Don’t Forget Your Top Shelf

We all do it. The massive stack of hoodies and t-shirts on the top shelf of your closet can become a crazy jumbled mess. The stacks fall over and you don’t even know what’s up there anymore. After you’ve sorted through it, use clothing dividers to avoid toppling and messes for any items you choose to stack.

Invest in Organization

Take a little trip to the Container Store and invest in some quality organization tools. Consider your needs and pick out newer slim hangers, belt racks, jewelry storage, shoe compartments, space saver bags, hampers, wire boxes or shelf dividers. These will make your life a million times easier! By having your items organized, you’ll find you will wear more of your clothes more often.

Use the Hanger Trick

This is a nice little spring cleaning tip to prepare yourself for the next time you clean your closet out. When you’re hanging up all your clothes, hang them backwards on the rod. After you wear a piece of clothing and are hanging it up again, hang them front facing. Whenever you decide to organize and clean again, you’ll easily be able to tell what you’ve never worn, making it easier to decide to toss or donate!

Damp Proof Storage

If you’re planning on storing your winter clothes in bags in a basement, this tip is for you. By simply placing a piece of chalk into the bag of clothes you’re storing you can successfully keep your clothes dry. The chalk will absorb any moisture, keeping your clothes perfectly protected.

Vacuum, Mop, Dust

Closets can get dirty. It’s simply not a place that probably gets much cleaning love on a regular basis. Before you put your favorites back into your closet, seize the opportunity to deep clean all the crevices. Vacuum or mop the floors, dust, make satchels of fresh smelling potpourri and wipe down baseboard/doors. Make it super fresh and clean!
