It’s time to clean out your closet! But it is such a daunting task. It’s never easy, sometimes seemingly impossible to toss those old clothes. After all, you paid good money for those shoes you found on sale that are still in the box. Or, that dress has so much sentimental value, you just can’t bear to part with it. Sound familiar? You are not alone.
When you finally decide to go through with it and organize your closet, set a date, and stick to it. Then, as you go through things, ask yourself these questions:
- Does it fit? Not only in terms of size, but in style as well.
- The age old, have I worn it in the past 12 months?
- Is it likely I will ever put this on again?
- Is it damaged? A garment with pilling, tears, stains or missing buttons, broken zippers or extreme fading is very likely to never be worn again.
- If I saw this in a store, would I but it today?
- And perhaps the most important question, does wearing this make me feel confident?
When your answer to any one of these questions is less than positive, throw it in the “get rid of” pile. Once you’ve established what to get rid of and what to hang on to, you have several positive options for disposing of the items you’ve decided to part with.
If, like most people, you live on a budget, it may not be feasible to replace a few of the items with new ones. After all, you just cleaned out your closet. You deserve a little reward, right?
You can sell your unwanted clothing easily enough on ebay, and any of the other social media related marketplace type sites that seem to be springing up at a rapid pace. A yard sale, or trip to your local flea market may be another viable option worth considering.
There is virtually an unending list of charitable organizations accepting donations of clothing. For example, many Veteran’s organizations will pick them up right from your front porch. There is also the ever-present Goodwill. And remember, your donations are completely tax deductible.
Just Get Rid of Them
The easiest, but perhaps least desirable way to dispose of those old clothes is to simply put them out with the trash. But that would probably be like throwing away money.
